A Career in Academic Research
Dr Ruth Saunders [BSc (Hons) Biological Sciences (Physiology), 1996] is a Senior Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Glenfield Hospital. She discusses her current research on the molecular biology of asthma before talking in more detail about the pros and cons of carrying out working in academic research. It was striking in how many cases she made the same points as Dr Jannine Clapp in her earlier talk What is a postdoc? In particular, the fact that academic research does not pay as well as working in industry, but this is off-set by the intellectual excitement of being able to pursue side-projects as they arise rather than being constrained by the objectives of the company.
